Most cars give you some warning before a small problem becomes an expensive one. Knowing which signs need immediate attention, and which can wait for your next service, helps you stay safe and avoid bigger repair bills. Here are the signs that mean you should book in with a mechanic straight away.
Red warning lights on the dashboard
Red warnings, such as oil pressure, engine temperature, brake system or charging faults, mean stop as soon as it is safe to do so. Continuing to drive can cause serious damage. Amber lights, such as the check engine light, are usually less urgent but should still be checked promptly. A flashing check engine light often indicates a misfire, which can damage the catalytic converter if you keep driving.
Grinding, squealing or a soft brake pedal
Squealing often means the pads are near their wear limit. Grinding usually means metal on metal contact, which damages rotors quickly. A pedal that feels soft, sinks towards the floor or needs more pressure than usual can point to a hydraulic problem and needs attention immediately. Our brakes and suspension team can inspect the whole system.
Overheating or a rising temperature gauge
If the temperature gauge climbs above normal or you see steam, pull over, switch off the engine and let it cool. Never open the coolant cap while the engine is hot. Overheating can warp cylinder heads and damage gaskets, turning a simple coolant leak into a major repair.
Smoke from the exhaust
Blue smoke usually means oil is being burnt, white smoke that persists after warm up can indicate coolant entering the engine, and heavy black smoke often points to a fuelling problem. Each is worth investigating early. See our engine repair service.
Harsh, delayed or slipping gear changes
If your automatic transmission thumps into gear, hesitates, flares between gears or goes into limp mode, have it checked before the problem worsens. Many shifting problems are caused by fluid condition or electronic faults that are cheaper to fix when caught early. Learn more about transmission service and repairs.
Fluid leaks under the car
A few drops of water from the air conditioning is normal. Oil, coolant, brake fluid or transmission fluid is not. Note the colour and where the leak sits, then have it inspected.
Steering or handling changes
Vibration through the steering wheel, pulling to one side, clunks over bumps or a car that sits lower than usual after parking can all indicate worn steering or suspension components, or an air suspension leak on models that have it.
Strange smells
A burning smell, the sweet smell of coolant, or a strong fuel odour should never be ignored. These can indicate leaks onto hot components, which is a safety risk.
