Car Service Myths Debunked: What You Really Need to Know

There is no shortage of advice about car servicing, and a lot of it is out of date or simply wrong. Believing the wrong thing can cost you money, or worse, leave you with an unreliable car. Here are some of the most common myths we hear, and the facts behind them.

Myth: you have to service at the dealer to keep your warranty

Under Australian Consumer Law, you can have your new car serviced by an independent workshop without voiding the manufacturer’s warranty, provided the service follows the manufacturer’s schedule and uses suitable parts and fluids. What matters is that the work is done correctly and recorded. Our log book servicing is carried out to manufacturer specifications.

Myth: if the car is running fine, it does not need a service

Many problems develop quietly. Oil degrades, brake fluid absorbs moisture and rubber components age whether or not you notice a difference. Servicing on schedule is about preventing problems, not just fixing them once they appear.

Myth: low kilometres means you can skip services

Service intervals are based on time as well as distance. Cars that do mostly short trips can actually be harder on oil, because it rarely reaches full temperature. If the time interval has passed, the service is due.

Myth: all engine oils are the same

Modern engines are designed around specific oil specifications. Mercedes-Benz engines, for example, require oil that carries a particular Mercedes approval. The wrong oil can reduce protection for turbochargers, timing components and emissions equipment.

Myth: sealed for life means never serviced

Some components, such as certain automatic transmissions, are described as sealed for life, but the fluid inside still ages. Many manufacturers now list fluid service intervals, particularly for vehicles used for towing or in heavy traffic. Learn more about our transmission service.

Myth: a warning light can just be reset

Clearing a warning light without fixing the cause only hides the problem, and it usually returns. A proper diagnosis finds out why the light came on in the first place.

Myth: premium fuel always improves performance

Use the minimum octane rating recommended for your engine, which is often shown inside the fuel flap. Many European engines do require premium fuel. Using a higher rating than required usually makes little difference, but using a lower one than required can affect performance and efficiency.

Myth: you only need to replace brake pads when they squeal

Squealing is one warning sign, but pads and rotors should be measured at each service. Many Mercedes models also have electronic wear sensors. Waiting until you hear grinding usually means replacing rotors as well as pads. See our brakes and suspension service.
