Why Regular Oil Changes Matter for Engine Health

Regular oil changes are the foundation of engine care. Engine oil does far more than lubricate: it cools internal parts, carries away contaminants and protects against corrosion. When oil is left too long it breaks down, and the engine pays the price.

What engine oil does

Oil forms a thin film between moving metal parts so they do not wear against each other. It also absorbs heat, suspends soot and dirt so they can be caught by the filter, and contains additives that neutralise acids formed during combustion. Over time, heat and contamination use up those additives and the oil loses its ability to protect.

What happens when oil changes are skipped

Old oil thickens and forms sludge that can block small oil passages. That leads to increased wear on components such as timing chains, camshafts, bearings and turbochargers. Many expensive engine repairs can be traced back to extended or missed oil changes.

How often should oil be changed?

Follow the interval set by the manufacturer for your model, which is based on both time and distance. Many Mercedes-Benz models show a service reminder when the oil change is due. If you do a lot of short trips, tow, or drive in heavy traffic, the oil works harder, so staying on schedule is even more important. Do not wait for the kilometres to catch up if the time interval has passed.

Why the right oil matters

Modern engines are designed around specific oil specifications. Mercedes-Benz engines require oil that carries the correct Mercedes approval, which differs between petrol, diesel and newer engines. The right oil protects turbochargers, timing components and emissions equipment such as diesel particulate filters. We always use oil with the correct approval for your engine.

Signs your oil needs attention

  • An oil pressure or oil level warning on the dash
  • Oil on the dipstick that is very dark or gritty, on models with a dipstick
  • Louder engine noise, especially on start up
  • Oil leaks or a burning oil smell
  • Blue smoke from the exhaust

A red oil pressure warning means stop the engine as soon as it is safe. Driving with low oil pressure can destroy an engine within minutes.

More than just oil

An oil change at a proper service also includes a new oil filter and an inspection of the rest of the vehicle, so small problems are found early. Our log book servicing follows the manufacturer’s schedule for your car, and our engine repair team can investigate leaks or oil consumption.
