Filters are some of the least expensive parts on your car, yet they play a big role in performance, fuel economy and engine life. Keeping them clean and replacing them on schedule is one of the easiest ways to keep your vehicle running the way it should.
Engine air filter
The engine air filter stops dust and debris from entering the engine. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which can reduce performance and efficiency, particularly on turbocharged engines that move large volumes of air. Dusty conditions shorten its life, so it is checked at every service and replaced at the interval set for your model.
Oil filter
The oil filter traps contaminants so that clean oil reaches critical engine parts such as bearings, camshafts and turbochargers. It is replaced with every oil change. Using a quality filter that matches the manufacturer’s specification matters, because a poor fit or low quality media can reduce oil flow or filtration.
Fuel filter
The fuel filter protects injectors and the fuel pump from contaminants. This is especially important on diesel engines, where clean fuel is essential for modern high pressure injection systems. Some petrol models have a filter built into the fuel tank that rarely needs attention, while many diesels have a serviceable filter with a set replacement interval.
Cabin air filter
The cabin filter cleans the air coming into the car through the ventilation system. A blocked cabin filter reduces airflow, can cause musty smells and makes the air conditioning work harder. Many Mercedes-Benz models use activated charcoal cabin filters that also reduce odours. If your air conditioning smells or feels weak, see our air conditioning service.
Transmission filter
Many automatic transmissions have a filter that is replaced during a transmission service along with the fluid. Clean fluid and a clean filter help keep gear changes smooth and protect internal components. Learn more about our transmission servicing.
Signs a filter needs replacing
- Reduced power or sluggish acceleration
- Higher fuel consumption than usual
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Weak airflow or musty smells from the vents
- A check engine light related to airflow or fuel delivery
Do performance filters make a difference?
Aftermarket high flow air filters are popular, but on a standard road car the gains are usually small. The priority should always be a clean filter of the right specification. A neglected filter costs far more performance than the difference between brands.
